Jewels in the Sandbox by Sylvie Ackroyd

Awakening the mind to think clearly, enlivening the heart to feel deeply, and engaging the hands to act purposefully.
Preschool and kindergarten both provide young children with the safe feeling atmosphere full of rhythm and beauty.  The teachers work with reverence and strive to be a respectable model for the students.
When the children come to school, they play outside until all them have arrived.  After going inside, the kids have a circle period where they sing a morning song with hand movements, then they go wash their hands for a snack provided by the teachers.
Preschool has school three days a week, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.  Everyday the class has a different activity.  On Tuesday the class helps knead the bread dough.  On Wednesday the class draws pictures with crayons.  On Thursday they paint with water colors.  Also the class has free inside playtime.  After this, the class cleans up their games and sits in a quiet circle while the teacher tells a story.  They then go to the bathroom to wash their hands for lunch that they brought from home.  Next, the class, supervised by teachers, have an outside playtime until it is time to say good-bye.
Just like having a good morning circle, the Apple Blossom preschool has a good-bye circle.  After this, they go home.
“I really like crayon coloring day, where you draw with crayons, “ says Rowan Ackroyd, an Apple Blossom student.  He is referring to the main Wednesday activity.  The preschool has the same activities the same days every week.  This creates rhythm and engages their hands while they have fun.
When Colleen Hayes was asked why she sent her child to Sunflower Kindergarten she said, “I want River [Bolster] to appreciate stories and language and shapes and movement.”  The stories they are told are full of generosity, love, and respect.
This is a reason why parent choose Waldorf kindergarten or preschool.  Though for the children the experience is more about the fun.  As River Bolster say, “I like if there’s jewels in the sandbox, I love it.”

Percent signs are everywhere,
When I go here, when I go there.
Math, math, what a pain,
When you get your percent sign, you go insane.
When ads pop up on the TV,
You look around and what do you see?
Discounts and coupons are all the same,
Clothes with tags that have no name.
Clearance racks are very nice,
The clothes on them are all half price.
The car goes past billboards high,
They sometimes lie to make you buy.
You see percentages in reading the weather,
And then you leave as light as a feather.

Cispus Trip
September 9-10

The Middle School students attended the annual trip to the Cispus Ropes Course in Randle, WA.  They participated in challenge activities that built and strengthened skills in teamwork, communication, and critical thinking.  New friendships developed, a considerable amount of laughter occurred, and believe it or not, both cabins slept soundly.
